In the quiet act of facing the mirror, women throughout history have created self-portraits as bold and defiant acts of self-reclamation. “Seeing Ourselves, Self Portraits by the Artists of OKWA” draws on this history in their annual show. The term “self-portrait” conjures up figurative paintings of the head or the figure of the subject.  Here we are broadening the term to include to include abstract or introspective works that delve into emotional, psychological, or symbolic representations of self.
