FAMILY DAY “ARTSTRAVAGANZA” AT THE TETT

By Virlana Kardash

Looking for a creative way to spend Family Day? Our "Tett Artstravaganza!" starts at 6:30 am and continues all day, February 20th.

Shake up your wake up! with our always popular Dawnshaker Dance Party in the Malting Tower. From 6:30 am to 8:30 am, this family friendly event will start your family day off right. Costumes are encouraged and coffee and treats will be on site by Juniper Café. Face painting by Christine Harvey and music by My Kinda DJ.

Then join us starting at 10 a.m. to 12:00 (on every 1/2 hr) for “Tread on It” T-Shirt Printing. Ever looked at car parts as instruments of art? You will now. Jeff Mann has offered this fun-filled workshop across North America, and it’s been a hit everywhere he’s gone. According to Jeff, “I use car parts because I believe the car is the largely subliminal shaper of our world, and our cultural informer.” He provides the t-shirts; you provide the elbow grease…and don’t be surprised if the kids want to start wearing their shirts as soon as they’re dry! $5 and register here: info@tettcentre.org

From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Bonnie Crook will offer her Kids Creativity Club in the Activity Room, while over in the Malting Tower, at 2 p.m. and 3:15 the Kingston School of Dance will be putting on “The Snow Maiden.” Get swept away by midwinter magic in this short, family-friendly, original storybook ballet for dance lovers of all ages. “This is a chance for families to experience gorgeous music, the colour of beautiful costumes and lights, and the joy of dance,” says Melissa Mahady Wilton, dance instructor at the school.

Find the “Multicultural Arts Fest, Winter Edition” in the Rehearsal Hall and Creativity Studio F. According to Sunita Gupta from Kingston Immigration Partnership, “These performances and workshops will be family friendly and interactive. It’s an opportunity to try an instrument from another country or a style of art through a different medium. Global delicacies prepared by community members are always a treat!”

The Kingston Lapidary and Mineral Club will be hosting “Gem Trees” from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and “Wrapped Rings” from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Lapidary and Mineral Club. Register here: emoss@cogeco.ca

With no workshop over $5 and most of them by donation, there isn’t a better way to spend your Family Day this winter. For more details: info@tettcentre.org
