Portrait Painting for Beginners with Natasha Jabre

Join us for an exploration in portrait painting with Natasha Jabre. In this 3-hour workshop, you will learn how to develop a self-portrait from a reference photo. Students will observe, measure and record the human face using the Grisaille technique of underpainting. This class will address colour mixing, proper brush use, and glazing techniques. No experience is required, open to all skill levels.


Please bring a photo of yourself or someone else that is cropped at the shoulders at printed in both colour and black and white. Painting materials are supplied, including a canvas. Enjoy a small class size. Ages 16+


Proof of vaccination and masks are not required for this event.


$40 + HST/fees




Materials are included in the ticket cost. Canvases will be sized at 16"x20" or 18"x24". If preferred, participants can bring their own canvas as long as it measures 14"x18" or larger.

Participants must bring a photo of themselves cropped at the shoulders, printed in both black + white and colour. The Tett can print these photos for participants if they are emailed to arts@tettcentre.org by May 5th.



Natasha Jabre is an artist whose work encompasses multiple disciplines including drawing, printmaking, ceramics, abstract and representational painting. Jabre received her BFA from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, and her MFA from The University of Massachusetts in North Dartmouth. She has gained international recognition for her work, which combines realistic and surrealistic elements, and continues to exhibit her work in Canada and abroad. Jabre’s most recent painting series stage domestic households in dramatic, psychedelic lighting schemes. She currently resides with her husband and children in Kingston, Ontario.
