Drawing in Reverse for Beginners

Explore drawing in reverse with Tiina Kukkonen in the Malting Tower! In this workshop you will learn to observe and render light and shadow in reverse. This means adding in the light areas instead of dark, using white pencil on black paper. Applying this method, you will practice drawing fur and move toward creating a luminous and high contrast portrait of an animal. Suitable for youth, adults and seniors. Ages 12+. All materials provided, including reference images.

Tiina Kukkonen is a visual artist, arts educator, and doctoral candidate in the Faculty of Education at Queen’s University. Although formally trained in painting and drawing, Tiina has focused the last three years on needle felting. She approaches felted landscapes much like painting whereby colours are combined and layered to achieve visual effects. As an arts educator and researcher, she has taught visual arts to students of all ages and advocates for equal access to arts education opportunities for rural and underserved communities.
