In the quiet act of facing a mirror, women throughout history have turned self-portraiture into a bold and defiant gesture of self-reclamation. Seeing Ourselves: Self Portraits by the Artists of OKWA draws on this legacy for its annual exhibition, inviting both artists and viewers to consider the many ways identity can be revealed.
Traditionally, the term “self-portrait” evokes an image of the artist’s face or figure rendered in paint. In this exhibition, the concept expands beyond likeness to encompass the emotional, psychological, and symbolic dimensions of the self. From figurative works to abstract expressions, these portraits illuminate character, memory, and imagination in unexpected ways.
The result is an exhibition that invites reflection—an experience as compelling for those creating the work as it is for those encountering it.
