Artist Statement
The title for my exhibition is influenced by my love of art, design and architecture.
My exhibition is based on a collection of my art, over the last six years. This art reflects my journey of healing and overcoming difficult moments in my life. The mediums I’ve used are quite varied.
For example, the watercolour and photography punch hole art, is how I dealt with making sense of my life. I see the women in these paintings as myself and the dots are parts of me scattered everywhere.
My watercolour paintings of nature, reflects my need to be close to nature, as it’s always given me strength and solace in dark moments.
I experimented with pastels over the last six years, because of the soft and creamy texture. They glided easily onto paper and reminded me to be softer and kinder to myself.
My bold and colourful acrylic paintings showed me coming out of the darkness and feeling joy and gratitude for the life I have.
Finally, my paintings of my two walks on the Camino de Santiago. My first pilgrimage was on the ‘Portuguese Way’ in May of 2019, 280 km across Portugal and Spain. The second pilgrimage was the ‘French Way’ in September of 2024, 800 km across France and Spain. For those of you that are not familiar with the Camino Trail, my path took me 800 km from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France, to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, over the course of five weeks. There is a network of pilgrimage routes all leading to the shrine of St. James in the Cathedral Santiago de Compostela.
During my walk on the ‘French Way’ in 2024, I decided to pack a small watercolour set in my backpack, no bigger than the palm of my hand, which also included a small book of watercolour papers and a watercolour pen, no pencil no eraser. I wanted to be intuitive and stretch my drawing skills. After each day of walking for eight to nine hours, I would rest, eat, and then pull out my images from the day, off my phone. I would sit in my Albergue / hostel or at a Spanish café and sketch and paint my favourite image of the day. My fellow pilgrims were always so interested and amazed that I had the energy and desire to paint after such long and difficult days of walking. It was my delight and joy to paint at the end of each day.
For this exhibition, I will be sharing the 35+ watercolours I painted along the Way, as well as my multi-media paintings, which consist of a textured gel medium, watercolour ink as my underpainting and oil and pastel to complete my pieces. These newest works are also of my walk on the Camino de Santiago. It is my desire to share my experience of the Camino through my art, so that others may be inspired and healed by the walk. Everyone should walk at least one Camino in their lifetime; it forever changes you.
