Join artist Erin Kennedy for a hands-on introduction to creative electronics and new media art. In this workshop, participants will build a nature-inspired Robot Butterfly that can move its wings, chirp a little melody, and light up using electronics. This workshop is great for beginners as it offers an accessible and fun entry point into robotics and electronics art that is playful, interactive, and visually striking. Alongside building, participants will be invited to share stories about nature and creatures that are meaningful to them, whether it’s a favourite insect or pollinating plants from their home region. No prior experience is required, bring your curiosity and a willingness to experiment!

  • Date: Thursday, June 4
  • Time: 6:30 – 8:30PM
  • Location: Rehearsal Hall, Tett Centre
  • Facilitator: Erin Kennedy

Accessibility:

No prior knowledge or experience is needed. Erin has experience guiding participants of various ages who are new to electronics.

  • Patience and openness to learning new skills are encouraged
  • Fine motor coordination is helpful but not required—assistance (including soldering) can be provided
  • Close-up vision for working with small components is recommended; support is available if needed
  • Instructions will be provided during the workshop, with a more streamlined version available on-site. If you’d like to review them in advance, they can be found here. The instructions include both images and written English text. Participants are encouraged to bring a smartphone, tablet, or laptop to view them at their own pace and/or use translation tools.

Registration

This session is limited to 8 participants to ensure a supportive and hands-on learning environment.

As this workshop includes individually prepared electronic components and materials purchased in advance for each participant, we kindly ask that you register only if you are able to attend. This helps us reduce waste and ensure that materials are available for those who can fully participate.

If you require accessibility supports (e.g., ASL interpretation or second-language translation), please register by May 25 in advance so we can make arrangements.

About

Tett Centre for Creativity & Learning is excited to launch Creative Connections Lab, a free, inclusive, and accessible program offering arts experiences for adults (18+), with a focus on increasing access for individuals who face barriers to participating in the arts and opportunities for social connection. Through a series of interdisciplinary, artist-led workshops, participants engage with multiple art forms—such as visual arts, movement, music, and storytelling—while exploring self-expression, reducing social isolation, and fostering meaningful community connection. Second-language translation and ASL interpretation are available to support accessibility.

This program is generously funded by a Seed grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
